 ADVANCED PERMACULTURE DESIGN and PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Each student recieves:

  1. A 1 year designer subscription and tutorial for the Natural Capital™ Plant Database.
  2. Pre- Course Site Assessmnet Workbook (33 pages).
  3. All workshop tools and materials for the design process, in addition to technique guidance,  and concept consultation.
  4. A complete design experience from site assessment, concept and materials calculations to purchasing and installation.
  5. A completed personal homestead design.
  6. A deep and scientifically backed understanding of natural processes and resources which support a permaculture lifestyle.

 SouthWoods Permaculture

This workshop week includes the acclaimed SouthWoods Homestead Design Series curriculum plus daily design assignments, exercises, design critiques, private work space, tools, and desk. Work at your own pace with 24 hour access to the SouthWoods design lab, plant database, and library.

Included are intensive hands-on polyculture development, assessing ecological services, and installations of plant polycultures and forest garden patches. Students will experience material sourcing and purchsing at wholesale suppliers and use mplemenatation models, management guides, and supportive templates for their own concepts.

Seasoned Designer - Instructors: 

  Wayne Weiseman is certified by The Permaculture Institute of Australia and the Worldwide Permaculture Network as an instructor of the Permaculture Design Certificate Course. He is also certified by the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) and the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) to teach continuing education in Permaculture to licensed architects and landscape architects. Wayne has taught, lectured and consulted internationally for many years.

Daniel Halsey, PRI Certified Teacher - Designer, and Owner of SouthWoods Permaculture Design. Dan has a bachelors degree in Temperate Climate Polyculyure Design from the University of Minnesota and is working on a masters in horticulture. His research includes Forest Ecology, Biocontrols, Polycultures, and the ecological design process. Dan also teaches project management, business, and marketing.


 

 

In the permaculture designer certification you found our landscape is filled with possibilities. Our lands already have all the ecological services we need to flourish and sustain an abundant lifestyle for growing our food, collecting fresh water for drinking and reducing your dependence on purchased resources.

This advanced design course unlocks the ecological capital that abounds within our yards, fields, and forests. It will give you the understanding, skills and foresight needed to assess, conceive and design your property into a perpetual harvest garden. Learn ecological landscape design language and technique while using the Permaculture design process to create an ecologically balanced residence and abundant lifestyle.

Pre-requisite: *PDC Certificate or advanced experience and instructor approval.

Study living forest gardens and landscape design techniques. Topics covered in the course will insure a life changing experience and enhance your skills for ecological design. Discover the sustainable solutions are specific to your site and enhance the ecological services.


The Schedule: 9AM Start, Noon Lunch, 6PM End

Day 1  Review of the Permaculture concepts
Design methodologies in future tense
Homestead Design I: Review Site Assessments & Begin Base Plan (UD1)
Base plans, plat maps, satellite maps, scaling and map measurements
Whole systems thinking, multifunctional, self repairing, and dynamic
Ecological design for increased natural capital
Drafting and drawing tools

Day 2   Homestead Design II: Permaculture Concepts for the Sustained Homestead (UD2) 
Observation exercises, Bubble diagrams,
Site assessment with supplied site assessment workbook and tool kits
The scale of permanence, sector analysis, niche analysis, patch dynamics, and the zone system,

needs, products and behaviors as templates for design

Design drivers, goal setting, envisioning the needs and wants of the client

Day 3   Homestead Design III: The Design Progression  (UD3) 
Recognizing and following natural patterns
Drawing practice and landscape symbols
Draft design (hand-drawing)
Day 4  Pike Lake Design site assessment and design charrette.
Day 5   Homestead Design IV: Concept and Draft Design Workshop (UD4)
Plant databases, building

databases, etc and Internet resources
Polyculture plant system design in gardens, edible forests, and perennial landscapes


Day 6   Homestead Design

V: Final Design and Supervised Work Session (UD5) Plant List Assembly, BioControls and Natural Habitat

Morning Evaluations, Group Critiques,

Planting Systems, Food Forests, 

Day 7   Concept evaluation, Wholesale Nursery Field Trip, Rework Designs, Private Consultations, Graduation, Farewells

 

Each participant

will be sent the 33 page SouthWoods Site Assessment Workbook

prior to the course.

Pay by check or cash and we supply all design tools for your coursework (see below).

Required Materials List:T-square 36”, Drafting tape,  Triangles: 45-90 degree & 30-60 degree,  Scissors Compass, Drafting pencils – HB, B, 2H, 4H,  8 Scale Ruler, Large and Small circle templates, Tube for carrying drawings, 8-scale graph paper; sheet size 24” x 36” (approx. 4 sheets), 24'x36' vellum paper , 2 sheets Bum Wad paper, Glue stick or double-stick tape, Eraser, Black ink pens – minimum of 3 tips: narrow, medium, bold  (Rent all tools for $35.00 or free with cash or check registration).

Lodging:  Camping is available on-site. Off-site lodging is available nearby.

Meals: A light breakfast and a daily lunch is provided. Dinner is arranged by the group or as individuals require.
